Wonder. Whimsy. What if’s.

Having sold-out its extended run at Vancouver’s PuSh Festival in Jan 2012, this original musical by Veda Hille & Bill Richardson sets actual Craigslist postings to music in a 90 minute song-cycle. Both hilarious and surprisingly poignant, Do You Want What I Have Got? explores contemporary humanity through the lens of Craigslist—an online classified site with over 50 million ads posted each month.

Bill Richardson is an award-winning writer and broadcaster with CBC Radio since 1984 and currently host of “Saturday Afternoon at the Opera” and “In Concert.”

Veda Hille has been writing songs, making records, and playing shows all over since 1992. She has released 13 albums, the latest being Young Saint Marie.

Acting Up Stage announces 2012/13 Season

Fresh on the heels of a stunningly successful year, Acting Up Stage is thrilled to announce their ninth season featuring two Mainstage productions, the Toronto premiere of a West Coast hit, a Canadian commission, a new performance venue, a prize for emerging artists, and 45 new young-artists in-training.

All of the programs in 2012-2013 explore 'connections': making connections in an isolating online world; losing and rebuilding connections with those we love most; celebrating connections between long-standing collaborators; fostering connections between young artists.

Acting Up-Stage Presents The Long and Winding Road

Acting Up-Stage would like to invite you to their third composer series concert.  After the success of Both Sides Now and The Sound of Silence the company presents The Long and Winding Road, featuring the music of John Lennon and Paul McCartney.  Familiar songs like "A Day in the Life," "Imagine," "Blackbird," and Let it Be" will be re-imagined by some of Canada's great musical theatre voices.

The Long and Winding Road features Thom Allison, Jackie Richardson, Michael Therriault, Graham Abbey, Sara Farb, Deborah Hay, Kelly Holiff, Jeff Irving, Amanda LeBlanc, Jeigh Madjus, Eden Richmond, Evan Alexander Smith, Mike Ross and Steve Ross.

Preview: Caroline, Or Change

Exploding onto the Toronto Stage this month is a beautiful production of the musical, Caroline, Or Change. It has received delicious reviews from critics in the city and we are excited to tell you about it!

Show Description:

Caroline, an African American maid to a Southern Jewish family, is struggling to keep afloat both emotionally and economically, while the young son of her employer tries to make sense of the world following the death of his mother. A Tony, Olivier, Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel and Obie award-wining musical—and the only musical of the 21st century on New York Magazine’s shortlist for “The Greatest Musical of All-Time”—Caroline, or Change mixes fact and fantasy, symbolism and reality, plus a wide palette of musical styles to tell the story of ordinary people facing extraordinary change.

Wood update!!!!!!!! And Check Out our Friends

Fall 2009 is already starting to look exciting for us here at Emerging Art Productions. It looks like EAP may be able to get Wood off the ground, in a special showcase early in the fall. This, despite being disappointed in our grant efforts. Because of our continued passion and commitment, some new energy and advice looks like it will pay off. Of course everything is preliminary at this point but we are very hopeful. And we will be sharing production information as it develops. So keep looking here for audition and performance information.

Lately, we have been looking to expand our network, and learn as much about the local theatre scene as possible, and our efforts have not gone unrewarded. And we are very excited to see that other groups and individuals here in Toronto are also developing new musical theatre, and cabaret projects. We are supper excited about all the dynamic stuff happening. Sometimes economic downturn and shifts in market can provide amazing and unexpected opportunities for creative ventures. And being a new face on the scene EAP is amazed and encouraged by the supportive energy. So thank you to the readers and supporters. And keep checking in on us to see what we and others are doing around the city. Just a quick plug for a few local friends with upcoming events.

In honor of Justin and my current travels I thought I would post this video of one of my favourite William Finn songs



I am also posting this as a apology for not writing a revue of A New Brain, which I saw a few weeks ago with Newberry. Ryan Kerr and I did have a dish session about it, but now that the show has closed it seems irrelevant to post a revue. I will say that overall I thought it was a great show and that both Thom Allison and Steven Gallagher were fantastic, the former for his incredible voice and the later for his his all around commitment and vulnerability. I am looking forward to what Acting Up Stage does next.

A New Brain

I had the pleasure of meeting Mitchell from Acting Up Stage yesterday for lunch. We chatted about theatre, the economy, and the difficulties of producing new musical work here in Toronto. It was great to meet him finally, since our interests overlap so much. I hope I will have the chance to get involved with a production of theirs at some point, and at the very least I will be going to see A New Brain, which opens at Berkeley Street Theatre Feb. 12.
