Our favourite show of 2012 and one of our favourite shows ever produced is back and opening this weekend at the Young Centre. In the dead of winter we need this incredibly charming and delicious piece of theatre to inspire some warmth and deep belly laughs. YOU MUST check this out!

Show Description:

First workshopped at the Young Centre before winning Patrons' Pick and Best of Fringe at the 2012 Toronto Fringe Festival, pomme is french for apple is a fresh, funny, and irreverent look at womanhood in all its glory: its perils, its pleasures and all kinds of madness in between. Comprised of a fast-paced series of vignettes, the show is a vaudevillian and distinctly West Indian exploration of the absurdity of women’s lives in settings as diverse as the islands, downtown Toronto and southeast London. pomme is french for apple is created and performed by Liza Paul and Bahia Watson, recipients of the 2012 RBC Footprint Award, presented by Obsidian Theatre, for their contribution to the arts. Preview: RARE by Judith Thompson

Premiering tonight at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts is the smash hit from last year's Fringe Festival, RARE. The piece was created and directed by the very talented Judith Thompson. We are so thankful for the Young Centre and its commitment to bringing fresh, new and engaging pieces of theatre to the stage. Show Description:

RARE is a raw and boldly emotional piece of theatre in which nine performers with Down syndrome reveal themselves for the world to see. Created and directed by playwright Judith Thompson, with the cast writing most of their own material, the RARE artists lift the mask of Down syndrome to show us their humour, their grace, their rage and their dreams. It was a hit, and a Patrons' Pick, at last year's Toronto Fringe Festival. Mature content.

We are beyond thrilled to be heading to the Distillery District tonight to see our very dear friend Diana Bentley in Soulpepper's remount of the much loved and adored classic, Our Town.

Furthermore, not only is the king of the Toronto theatre scene, Joseph Ziegler, directing the production(!!!), but the one and only Nancy Palk will be back under the lights at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts. The show itself is a profoundly moving piece of work and we are urging all of you to check it out over the next few months!!!

Soulpepper's beloved version of Thornton Wilder's masterpiece Our Town returns to remind us to make the most of life's every blessing. Wilder's gentle, humorous and poetic theatrical meditation takes us to the community of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire, where the simplest acts can leave the greatest impressions. 2006 Dora Award (Outstanding Production).

Opening tonight at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts down in the Distillery District is the World Premiere of David Yee's paper SERIES.

Show Description:

From an ill-advised waiter who finds new uses for fortune cookies, to an orphan who creates parents out of paper dolls, to a cab driver who replaces his taxi license with his medical credentials. Written by Dora Mavor Moore Award and Governor General’s Literary Award nominee David Yee, paper SERIES examines how we use paper to create, amuse, define and communicate. paper SERIES is a collection of six short plays that explore how we use paper to create, amuse, define and communicate. It is, at times, quiet and reflective, raucous and violent… changing tone with every fold.

paper SERIES was developed with the assistance of Diaspora Dialogues and Factory Theatre’s Performance Spring Festival, and was workshopped at the 2007 SummerWorks Festival, where NOW Magazine named it one of the Outstanding Productions of the festival. paper SERIES was published in Canada’s first Asian-Canadian drama anthology, love & relasianships (Playwrights Canada Press) in 2009.
