Preview: The Penelopiad

Starting off the new year in fine form in the city, we have the remounting of THE PENELOPIAD from the Nightwood Theatre company. It was a critical darling last year and audiences went crazy for it. We highly recommend this gem of a show!

Destined to spend eternity in Hades, Penelope recounts her life’s story and the murder of her twelve handmaidens by her vengeful husband Odysseus. British playwright Bryony Lavery's 2007 play Stockholm has only a few more performances at the Tarragon Extra Space. The piece comes from Nightwood Theatre and is directed by Kelly Straughan and stars Melissa-Jane Shaw and Ryan Hollyman. The show, which has been garnering stellar reviews, tells the story of Todd and Kali, a couple who seem perfect on the surface but have a powerful distrust and desire underneath. Author of more than twenty plays in the past thirty-five years, Lavery is known for her work's underlying feminist themes and heafty women's roles. Her 1998 hit Frozen was nominated for the Tony for Best Play, and 1992's Her Aching Heart was acclaimed by the queer community. For more info or to purchase tickets please click here!! Preview: The Happy Woman

Opening tonight at the Berkeley Street Theatre is Nightwood Theatre's World Premiere of The Happy Woman.  This darkly comic play looks at how a middle-class family suppresses truth to maintain a happy veneer for the outside world.  The show is in previews tonight and tomorrow and opens officially March 7th.  The Happy Woman runs until March 24th.  Monday through Saturday 8pm, matinees Wednesday at 1:30 pm and Saturdays at 2pm.

Tickets are $22 - $46.

Preview: Ruined

Opening this week at The Berkeley Street Theatre is the sexually and politically charged RUINED, by Lynn Nottage. The piece is presented by Obsidian Theatre Company in association with Nightwood Theatre Company.

Show Description:

Set in a present-day small mining town in Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lynn Nottage's Ruined (2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama) follows a young woman's path to Mama Nadi, a savvy businesswoman who, in the midst of a complex civil war, both protects and profits from the women whose bodies have become battlegrounds.

At once heartbreaking and captivating, Ruined pays homage to the courageous and resilient women who must piece themselves together after the ruin.
