Press Release:

The Sony Centre For The Performing Arts is pleased to welcome the return of Cirque Éloize and their critically acclaimed production, iD. The Toronto Star raved “You're not going to find a more energetic, mind-blowing, roof-raising piece of entertainment than iD”, and now, after two years, the show finally returns to Toronto, Thursday, November 1 – Saturday, November 3, 2012 at the Sony Centre For The Performing Arts for four performances only.

Created by Jeannot Painchaud, founder and Artistic Director of Cirque Éloize, iD weaves together hip hop, breakdance, trial bike, and ten circus disciplines including tumblers, acrobats, jugglers, and contortionists. The end result is a production rich in youth and athleticism powered by a rousing soundtrack and state-of-the-art video projections. iD’s plotline pulls the audience in to a world where urban circus art meets West Side Story in this seamless combination of contemporary circus and theatricality.

Cirque Éloize has been creating moving performances filled with magic since 1993. Continually striving for artistic perfection, it is one of the leaders in contemporary circus arts. Based on the multidisciplinary talents of its artists, Cirque Éloize expresses its innovative nature and humanity through the combination of circus arts with music, dance, and theatre in a groundbreaking and original manner. Preview: Alvin Ailey

Revelations from AlvinAileyAmericanDanceTheater on Vimeo.

One of the greatest modern dance companies going, Alvin Ailey's American Dance Theater is coming to Toronto for a limited run at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts.  I can remember seeing Alvin Ailey tours when I was a very young dancer in San Francisco, and "Revelations", the piece above, is still one of the most moving things I have ever seen onstage.  If you have never seen Alvin Ailey, or if it has just been a while then be sure not to miss them while they are in town for four performances February 2nd - 4th.  Click here for ticket information.  And click here to see the line-up each night, the shows are slightly different, although all four performances feature "Revelations."

Still not convinced? Check out this clip from Artistic Director Robert Battle's work "Hunt."  An athletic piece featuring six male dancers on the hunt.

Mirvish and Sony Centre announce affiliation deal

Photo: RICK EGLINTON/TORONTO STAR
Mirvish Productions and the Sony Centre are joining forces to cross-promote and co-produce programming, announced David Mirvish and Dan Brambilla, CEO of the not-for-profit Sony Centre. Both companies are major heavyweights in the Toronto theatre community and the new partnership has got a lot of people talking.

According to Ouzounian in The Star; "both men revealed that they will immediately start offering their patrons special arrangements to purchase tickets for the other’s shows; help each other with cooperative publicity and make the spacious (3,200-seat) Sony available for up to 10 weeks a year for Mirvish-Brambilla co-productions that would demand the increased capacity and production facilities" (Thestar.com)

It will be interesting to see how this all pans out, however, to read the full article in The Globe and Mail regarding this merge, click here!
