Preview: Iphigenia in Tauris

Opera is back! Opening tomorrow night at the COC, for eight performances only, is Gluck's incredibly moving, Iphigenia in Tauris. This electrifying opera sees the return of Robert Carsen to the COC as director. The stelar cast includes Susan Graham, Russell Braun, Joseph Kaiser and Mark S Doss. Several of whom, including Carsen, Graham and Doss, performed Iphigenia in Tauris to critical acclaim in the San Francisco Opera Company production, in 2007. The show has since travelled the world, with stops in Chicago and London. This production is produced in part by Lyric Opera of Chicago, The San Francisco Opera and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.

Graham, in her COC debut, is said to be unmissable in this one, so if you are a fan of the opera, or would just like to try it out, this is your chance. Iphigenia in Tauris launches what is sure to be a terrific 2011/12 season at the COC. Don't forget if you are under 30 you can get tickets as cheap as $22 dollars. Single tickets for any opera this season are also available. Click the header for more information or call 416.363.8231.

Preview: Next to Normal

OK Toronto. Are you ready? It is has officially arrived! And EAP is going to the opening tonight of this groundbreaking musical. I had the honour of seeing NEXT TO NORMAL two years at the Booth Theatre and I found it to be a profoundly moving experience. It is dark, funny, well written, executed and directed. We would like to thank Dancap for always being so open and generous with us here at EAP and for making us feel apart of the Toronto theatre community no matter the scale or scope of shows they produce. We applaud you Dancap.

Show Description:

From the director of Rent comes the most talked about show on Broadway, NEXT TO NORMAL, Alice Ripley, who received the 2009 Tony Award® for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning NEXT TO NORMAL, will reprise her acclaimed performance as Diana Goodman, a woman crippled by bi-polar disorder, for the final time as the musical’s 36-week multi-city North American tour comes to a close in Toronto.

NEXT TO NORMAL also features Asa Somers (Dan), Curt Hansen (Gabe), Emma Hunton (Natalie), Canada’s own Jeremy Kushnier (Dr. Madden/Dr. Fine) who starred as Tommy DeVito in the First National Tour, and first Canadian company, of Jersey Boys in Toronto, and Preston Sadleir (Henry).

With a thrilling contemporary score, NEXT TO NORMAL is an emotional powerhouse of a musical about a family trying to take care of themselves and each other. In awarding the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Pulitzer Board called NEXT TO NORMAL "a powerful rock musical that grapples with mental illness in a suburban family and expands the scope of subject matter for musicals."

Preview: Nixon in China

On now at the Four Season Centre is Nixon in China. The opera by John Adam's is based on the historic visit by President Nixon, to China, during his ill-fated presidency. But, perhaps more important than Nixon's resignation were the 5 days the President spent in China. Nixon's China visit is often viewed as the crowning achievement for his administration. Adam's opera combines the public spectacle, the historic weight and quiet reflections of one of the most important events in modern diplomacy. With a beautiful score, and all the talent at the Canadian Opera Company, were sure Nixon in China is not to miss.

Nixon in China is on now until the 26th of February. For ticket information click the header.
